Welcome to my new career series: 9-to-the-Nines! The title is a spin off of the typical 9-5, since my job as a broadcast journalist can be more like a 9-9 (or with more unpredictable hours, like a 3 a.m. to noon shift). It also plays off the phrase “dressed to the nines.”

Being a TV reporter is very much a (fun) whirlwind. People always ask me what a typical day looks like, and the answer truly is there isn’t one! I need to be prepared to run from an interview at Philadelphia City Hall to a water main break to a homicide scene in a matter of minutes. That means my wardrobe has to look professional on-air but still be practical on-the-ground. I do keep “back-up” outfits at my desk, but I try to dress appropriately and comfortably each day.

My career path also requires a level of care about image, which has always been a strange concept for me. While I’ve always loved fashion, I didn’t touch makeup until I was in my early 20s! It took me a while to figure out that eyebrows really do define a face, can I get an amen? In this series, I’ll also be sharing my favorite beauty picks. Stila’s ‘Stay All Day’ liquid lipstick in the shade ‘Patina’ is my daily go-to both on and off-air. Its staying power is unmatched, and the color goes well with everything!

I think many can attest to the seeming correlation between looking and feeling your best. Even if my workload gets overwhelming, knowing that I can at least “have it together” in one department helps me attack my tasks with more confidence. Besides just sharing workwear, I also plan to interview bold career women who inspire me. I hope this series inspires you, too!
